Surgery “Down There”

***Warning, fairly graphic***

Okay so here it is. My girl bits suck… or at least they did.

It started on November 21, 2007. I was in labor with my sweet boy and spent 5 hours pushing. At the end of that exhausting experience I had a baby and a prolapsed cervix. The positive was that it landed me on strict 2 week bed rest after the birth, which meant lots of snuggle time with my new love.

Then on October 2, 2009 I had a lovely second birth. Quick and easy and it resulted in my sweet baby girl. However, I knew things down there were not the same. Something seemed off.

On September 11, 2010 my issues really began. After a busy week of getting our old house prepped for a sale my cervix/uterus prolapsed again. Feeling like a little golf ball hanging out of me. It was uncomfortable and I felt some painful cramping.

Having no clue what was happening at the time I went to the ER. The young and handsome ER doctor that assisted me during my visit casually told me“oh, that’s just your cervix, we’ll just shove it back in and then you can go… don’t forget to follow up with your regular doctor. G’night.” I wish this was an exaggeration. My visit with the doctor took less time than it did for me to undress.

Follow up I did. In fact I got 3 different opinions. All of them said surgery was necessary. 2 of the 3 said I needed a hysterectomy (the third didn’t actually not recommend it, she just didn’t mention the details of what a surgery would entail). On top of that I found out that not only did I have a uterine prolapse. But that I also had a bladder prolapse (cystocele), a rectal vaginal prolaspe (rectocele), and a vaginal vault prolapse.

Yep. At 35 my vagina was basically broken. And if I wanted to get fixed I’d lose the chance to have other babies.

Coming to peace with the fact that I was done, really, really, really done with having kids I made the decision to go ahead with the surgery. January 19, 2011 I had my surgery. It was invasive and long, but it was going to tackle basically 4 surgeries in one. The surgery went well, however the damage was more extensive and they couldn’t fix the rectocele. Which meant at some point, maybe a year or two, I’d need another surgery.

Recovery was long and hard… especially with a 3 year old and a 16 month old. A 16 month old who was still nursing and had ZERO intentions of weaning. But I managed. Week by week things improved and I was finally feeling back on track. I joined Weight Watchers and started losing weight.  However, something felt off. My rectocele felt bad. I knew that it wasn’t fixed, but with everything else back in place my doctor was thinking it would be manageable for a bit longer. Nope. It was bad. So 6 months after my surgery I was scheduled for a second one.

I can’t put into words the nerves and emotions that come with these surgeries. Prior to my first surgery I had only ever had my wisdom teeth out. I had NEVER stayed the night in a hospital… I had never had an IV… both of my births were out of the hospital so it was all so new to me. To say the least I was so nervous I caused myself some MAJOR gastrointestinal distress and many sleepless nights.

In reading up on my second surgery, not wanting to talk about with anybody but a VERY select few… I came across this blog post: Let’s Talk Posterior Colporrhaphy. I was impressed with her candor in telling the whole blog sphere about her experience. If you were to google you’d find that there aren’t hardly any blog posts or news articles about these kinds of surgeries. There are some message boards but other wise vagina surgery isn’t a big internet topic. Anyway, she inspired me to talk about my situation.

It’s been 4 weeks since the second surgery. First two weeks were rough, but not even in the same ballpark as my first surgery. Though I am sore, it feels great to be relieved of the symptoms.

The end!

Studio Photos

Over the weekend I spent several hours organizing, then reorganizing, then cleaning my work room. Though it took time away from the beautiful day and I didn’t get any actual “work” done it was bliss cleaning it. After taking the photos it became quite clear that I need some major art in there. I guess I can work on that next.

The best part of my studio is it awesome view!

Our New Kitchen

We bought a wonderful 1950′s Mid-Century home back in December. Many, many things about this house are pure wonderful. The kitchen was not.

It wasn’t horrible by any means, just really outdated and not in theme with the rad-ness of the rest of the house.

BEFORE Oak and beige haven:

BEFORE Eating nook:

We decided to keep the cabinet frames, but the replace the doors, flooring, counter tops, back splash, appliances and paint colors.

We had some cheap labor:

The AFTER pictures are just breathtaking. I still can’t believe this is my kitchen.

Eating nook:

When we were searching for inspiration and ideas for our kitchen (which we designed completely on our own) I scoured the internet. Details were extremely important to us and often left out of the blogs I read.

So for any fellow kitchen remodelers, here are the details of what we bought.

Floor: Cork tiles from CorkArt Cork Concepts, color Chunk Navajo
Back Splash: Glass Blox by Crossville, color: Lime Shimmer
Counter top: Quartz by Caesar Stone, color: Misty Carrera
Appliances: Oven/induction cooktop, Dishwasher, Fridge

Now for the big thing. Cost. I have been debating whether I should reveal how much this cost us. My main hesitation is that you won’t believe me. But here is how the pricing broke down:

Back splash: 1280
Floor: $2800
Counter top/Sink: $4300
Appliances: $3450
All painting: $2400
Electrical work: $870
Cabinets: $3300
TOTAL: $18,400

So for under $20,000 we have our dream kitchen. We are BEYOND thrilled with the results.

Etsy Seller Feature: Felicity Style

Joy of Felicity Style is a dear friend that I have known at least 25 years (maybe more?). Both our parents made handmade wares and sold them at the same venue in southern Missouri. At the time Branson, MO was not a household name. It hadn’t quite been discovered yet, but it was still a regional vacation hot spot and a trip wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Silver Dollar City. That is where Joy and I met. A LONG TIME AGO.

I moved freshman year of high school and lost touch with many dear friends, including Joy. If only we had Facebook then. But thanks to Facebook Joy and I reconnected. Yay! I was thrilled when Joy opened her own Etsy store and am even more thrilled to share it here!

More about Felicity Style from Joy:

I opened up my Etsy store at the end of January 2011. I knew Etsy was a great way to help share my product and I really love what they stand for.
My parents owned their own leather store when I was a kid, They made everything from belts, hats to purses and wallets. I remember loving the smell of the leather and trying to get my hands on their tools without getting caught.  Though I was very young when they got out of that business,  they still passed the tools down to me. My parents have both talked me through questions I had  on the craft, showing me things here and there. But a lot of trial and error plus some memory of watching my parents as a child has comes back to me when I work on my bracelets.

I find inspiration in fashion, nature, and  things happening around me. Seeing my neighbor kids go to prom inspired one of cuffs called tuxedo.

I live close to Branson, so the craft scene is pretty big here, But my take on leather cuffs is more the  down town urban look than traditional leather crafting.
One of my favorite things to do is recreate something and make it fit in to my style! I also  love to bake,  which sometimes gets me into trouble since I have such a sweet tooth! I love spending time with my family. I have a terrific 9 yr old son and great husband and find being a mom and wife the most rewarding!

What food would I never eat? Most everything they serve on survivor! The bugs being a delicacy are just not coming near my mouth!!

Now if you are nosy like me you’ll want to see her workspace:

LOVE the colors! Beautiful!

One day I’ll show you all mine… if it is ever clean enough to photograph!

Etsy Seller Feature: Elk Dresses

I discovered Elk Dresses last summer, not even sure how, but I quickly fell in love with the many SUPER cute dresses and diaper covers.

Many of styles were soooo Mabel that I ended up buying three of her dresses.

It has long been a goal of mine to screen print on dresses… it has just been a matter of finding the “right” dresses. I was THRILLED when Marjory, of Elk Dresses, agreed to make some for me! They are wonderful, I couldn’t be happier with her quality and craftsmanship.

I asked Marjory some questions because I’m nosy interested in her process.

When did you open your Etsy store? What prompted you to do it?

I opened it in March of 2010. I started experimenting with sewing knits partly because my youngest only liked dresses or soft knit bottoms. I wanted to see if I could do it–the challenge of it intrigued (and still does) me!

Who taught you to sew and how long have you been doing it?

My mom gave me a sewing machine for the second Christmas I was married, before my first daughter was born. So between a couple good instruction books and calling her on the phone, I taught myself to sew. So it’s been a little over 8 years now, and I’m more addicted than ever.

What inspires your designs?

Random stuff, things my kids like, color combinations, adult fashion–especially Anthropologie and pictures I see pop up on my Pinterest page from friends.

Where do you live and what is the art and crafts scene like for you there?

I live in Queen Creek, Arizona. And I have no idea what the scene is like! I’m a social recluse…no, actually, I have three kids, so it’s much easier for me to manage things online on my own time.

Do you do craft shows or sell locally anywhere?

Right now I’ve just been doing online orders. I like being able to do things on demand, so to speak.

How do have the time to sew with your busy family?

My girls are on a modified school schedule, and they don’t go to school until 10:30. In the mornings as we are getting ready I try to get all my household chores done so that while the two older girls are in school, my little one can hang out and play around me while I sew. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I also sew in the evenings while they’re asleep, and that’s my most productive time.

How do you promote your dresses?

I’ve been working a lot on Facebook, and I like to do giveaways. After this summer is over, I plan on doing more giveaways.

What are your long terms goals for your business?

My first year, I made a mental goal to hit 50 sales on Etsy. For my second year, I want to hit 150. I’m on my way! Besides that I’d just like to produce more and sell more. I have some ideas for chiffon skirts and I will be doing leggings soon.

When you have down time, what things do you do to recharge?

I like to watch different tv series with my hubby. Right now we are going through Lost again–it’s so much better when you don’t have to wait weeks or months between episodes!

What food would you not eat for any amount of money in the world?

Pretty much anything shown on Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods! ACK! Also, duck. Ducks are my favorite bird. Can’t eat them.

Thanks Marjory!

A Gallery of My Custom Projects

One of the first custom orders I received was from Wei-Shin and Jason from Run Phones, they needed custom onesies made with their logo. I was new to the screen printing game, but thrilled to challenge myself and make these for them. I did these by hand using the freezer paper stencil method.

Mostly my custom work comes from friends (like Jason and Wei-Shin) or some other friends who requested these next two items:

Another friend has a daughter that LOVES horses… so I recently made her this:

I won’t sell copyrighted material, even though I am a HUGE Star Wars fan, ethically I just won’t do it. However,  I made this design for another friend’s son at no charge (fan art). And not to leave little brother out, I made him a dump truck. The dump truck turned out great and this IS something I may start selling in my Etsy store (same with the horse up above)

Now for my most recent custom order. A fellow Etsy artist/photographer, Blue Oiseau, needed some custom shirts made for an event she was photographing. She was also bringing her daughter along with her and wanted something for her too. I loved how these turned out (even though I’m not as thrilled my own photography work on them).

Enjoy!
